What to write in your boyfriend's birthday card
If you're stuck on what to write in your boyfriend's birthday card, write four lines: the first thing you noticed about him, something he does that only you get to see, one moment from this year, and one thing you want to do with him next. That's a whole card, even if you're bad at words. Below is the formula with examples, then lines to borrow, sorted into short, funny and sweet.

The four-line formula for a boyfriend's birthday card
A card the size of your hand can't hold the whole relationship, so don't ask it to. Write four sentences, one for each of these, and stop:
- The first thing you noticed about him. Not "your smile": the actual thing. "The first thing I noticed was that you tipped the barista even though she got your order wrong."
- Something he does that only you get to see. The voice he does for the dog, the way he reads the last page of a book first. "Nobody at your work knows you sing in the shower. Badly. Every morning."
- One moment from this year. Small beats big. "I keep thinking about the Sunday we tried to fix the bike, got nowhere and ate cereal for dinner."
- One thing you want to do with him next. A plan, not a vow. "This year I want to finally see that lake you keep talking about."
Put "Happy birthday" before the first line and your name after the last, and that's the card. Here's what the four look like together:
Happy birthday. The first thing I noticed about you was that you tipped the barista even though she got your order wrong. Nobody at your work knows you sing in the shower, badly, every morning, and I hope it stays that way. I keep thinking about the Sunday we tried to fix the bike, failed completely and ate cereal for dinner. This year I want to see that lake you keep talking about. I love you.
If one of the four won't come, swap it for something he taught you this year, or something he got through that you're proud of. Three good lines still make a good card; a fourth written just to fill the space shows.
How much to write, and how to fit it in the card
| The card | What fits | What to write |
|---|---|---|
| A gift tag or a mini card | One or two lines | "Happy birthday" and line four, the plan |
| A standard folded card | Four to six sentences | The four-line formula |
| A blank card, both inside pages | A short letter | The formula, with the moment from this year told properly |
| More than any card holds | Anything | A short card, and the rest in a letter |
- Draft it first. Write it in your notes app, read it once out loud, then copy it out. Anything that sounds stiff when you say it will look stiff in ink.
- Keep it straight. Draw a faint pencil line to write along and erase it once the ink is dry.
- Write around the printed message, not over it. If the card already says something, start below it and don't repeat it.
- Test the pen. Gel ink smudges on a glossy finish, so try it on the back of the envelope first.
Short things to write in your boyfriend's birthday card
For a small card, for a card that comes with a bigger present, or when the present is doing most of the talking:
- "Happy birthday. You're still my first call."
- "Another year of you. Lucky me."
- "Happy birthday to the man who always knows where my keys are."
- "I'd pick you again. Happy birthday."
- "Thirty-one looks good on you. So did thirty." (Change the numbers to his age.)
- "Happy birthday. Tonight you choose what we watch."
- "Here's to more Saturdays like the last one."
Funny birthday card messages for your boyfriend
Funny works best when it's about something real, and when one joke is followed by one sincere line. Write the joke, then add "I love you" or a plan underneath:
- "Happy birthday. Your present is in the one cupboard you've never opened: the one with the cleaning stuff."
- "Another year older and you still think the dishwasher empties itself. I love you anyway."
- "Happy birthday to the only person I know who reads the instructions after it's built."
- "I got you a card instead of the thing you actually wanted. The card is from the heart. The thing is under the bed."
- "Happy birthday. I've told everyone you're turning 25 again, so please play along." (Best if he's well past it.)
- "Congratulations on surviving another year of my risotto. You're very brave."
- "You're now officially old enough to make that noise when you sit down."
Sweet and romantic birthday card messages for him
Sincere doesn't need big words. Plain ones read better in handwriting, and he'll believe them more:
- "I didn't know a year could hold this much. Happy birthday, and thank you for every day of it."
- "You make me braver than I am on my own. I love you."
- "I'm glad I get to be at your birthdays. All of them, I hope."
- "I hope this year is as kind to you as you are to everyone else."
- "Half the things I notice in a day, I notice so I can tell you later. Happy birthday."
- "Being with you feels like getting home after a long day. I love you."
What to write depending on how long you've been together
- A few weeks or months in. Keep it light and specific, and don't write "I love you" in a card if you haven't said it out loud yet. "Happy birthday. I'm glad I said yes to that second drink."
- A year or two. This is where the four lines work best: there are enough moments to choose from, and he'll remember every one you pick.
- Many years, living together. Skip the summary of the relationship and write about this year only. "This was the year you learned to make bread and I learned to eat it every single day. Happy birthday."
- After a hard year. Say it in one line, then turn back to him. "It's been a heavy year and you carried more of it than I did. Today is just for you."
How to sign a birthday card to your boyfriend
The sign-off is the last thing he reads, so give it a second thought. A few that aren't just "Love,":
- "All my love," when you mean the serious version.
- "Yours," which is short and a little old-fashioned in a good way.
- The name only he calls you. "Love, Bean" beats any line on this page.
- "See you at dinner," when there's a plan, so the card points to the evening.
- The date, written out in full under your name. Years from now, when he finds the card in a drawer, it tells him which birthday it was.
What to leave out
- An apology for the card. "I'm so bad at this" makes him read the rest as an effort. Just write the four lines.
- An explanation of the present. The card is about him; the present can speak for itself. If you still need one, our last minute birthday gift ideas can all be done tonight.
- Exes, birthdays that went wrong, and his weight. Even as jokes. They read worse in ink than they sound out loud.
- Inside jokes that need a footnote. If he'd have to ask what it means, he will, at the table, in front of his parents.
- A line copied word for word. Borrow the shape from the lists above and change one detail so it could only be about him.
When the four lines turn into twenty
Keep the card short and give the long version a place of its own; our guide on how to write a love letter helps with that part. A letter he opens on his phone has room for the memory you couldn't fit, and the photos that go with it. The Letter below is free and comes first on our list of digital gifts for your boyfriend; Birthday Cinema is premium, which lets you schedule it to open at midnight in his time zone. Our birthday gifts page has more ideas for the day, and if he's far away this year, our long-distance birthday plan sets out what to send and when.
Questions people ask
What should I write in my boyfriend's birthday card?
Four specific lines: the first thing you noticed about him, something he does that only you see, one moment from this year and one thing you want to do together next. Start with "Happy birthday" and end with your name, and that's a full card.
How long should a birthday card message be?
Long enough to fill the inside without cramming it, which in a standard folded card is usually four to six sentences. If you have more to say, keep the card short and write the rest as a letter.
What do I write in a birthday card for a new boyfriend?
Something light that belongs to the time you've had: a date you liked, a thing you've noticed about him. Save "I love you" for when you've said it out loud. One warm, specific line and your name is plenty.
Should a birthday card for my boyfriend be funny or romantic?
Both, in that order. One joke about something real, then one sincere line to finish, because the last line in a card is the one he remembers.
