How to apologize to your boyfriend and mean it

To apologize to your boyfriend, say exactly what you did, say it was on you with no "but", and say what you'll do differently. Then give him room to answer. Below are the four parts in order, example messages for small and big mistakes, what to do if he isn't ready to forgive you, and when a gesture helps or makes it worse.

Fold it with me, one crease at a time.

The four parts of an apology that lands

  1. Name it. Say what you did, plainly: "I made fun of your job in front of your friends." Not "I'm sorry about last night", which leaves him to fill in what you mean.
  2. Own it. "That was on me." If there was a reason, it can come later, once he's heard that you're not hiding behind it.
  3. Show you get why it hurt. One sentence from his side: "You've worked hard for that job and I made it a punchline." This is the part people skip, and the part that tells him you were listening.
  4. Say what changes. Something small and real you'll do differently: "If I'm annoyed with you, I'll say it to you, not to a table of people." Then keep it.

There's research behind which parts matter most. In a 2016 Ohio State study that asked people to rate apologies, acknowledging responsibility mattered most, an offer to repair came next, and asking for forgiveness mattered least. The study used workplace scenarios, not couples, but the lesson carries over: own it and offer to fix it before you ask for anything back.

How to say sorry to your boyfriend for a small mistake

For the everyday ones (late again, a plan forgotten, a short temper after a long day) keep it short, and say it soon. A small mistake gets bigger the longer it sits:

I'm sorry I snapped at you when you asked about dinner. I'd had a bad day and I took it out on you. You didn't deserve that.
I forgot we'd said Friday was ours and made other plans. That's on me. I've moved them, and Friday is yours if you still want it.
I was forty minutes late and didn't text. I know you waited. Next time I'll message before I leave, not after.

How to apologize after a big fight or when you've really hurt him

A broken promise, something cruel said in a fight, a lie. These need to be said in person if you can, and they need more than one sentence. Give each of the four parts its own line, and don't rush to the end:

I told you I'd stopped talking to him, and I hadn't. I lied to you, and there's no version of it where that's okay. I understand if it's hard to believe me right now. I've deleted the chat, and if you want to see my phone, you can. I'll earn it back, however long that takes.
What I said about your family last night was cruel, and I said it because I knew it would hurt. I'm ashamed of that. You'd trusted me with those things. I won't use them in a fight again.

If he asks why you did it, answer honestly and briefly, then stop. The explanation is for him to understand, not for you to be let off.

Then listen. Let him finish, even the parts you'd tell differently, and don't defend yourself mid-sentence. Say back what you heard ("You felt like I'd picked them over you") so he knows it landed. If something he says is unfair, it can wait for another day.

If you can't see him until later, don't save it all for tonight. Send one text now that names it and asks for the talk, then leave the rest for in person:

I keep thinking about what I said last night about your family. It was cruel and I'm sorry. Can I come over tonight and say it properly?

Apologize over text, in person or in a letter?

What not to say

  • "I'm sorry you feel that way." It apologizes for his feelings, not for what you did.
  • "I'm sorry, but…" Whatever follows the "but" is the part he'll hear.
  • "I said sorry. What more do you want?" An apology isn't a ticket that ends the conversation.
  • His old mistakes. Bringing up what he did last spring turns an apology into a trade.
  • What he said in the same fight. If he owes you an apology too, that's a separate conversation, on another day.
  • So many sorries he ends up comforting you. If you're crying harder than he is, take a minute, then bring it back to how he feels.

If he isn't ready to forgive you yet

That's allowed. Say it once, well, and then give him room: "I'm not going to keep pushing. I'm here when you want to talk." Don't send a message every hour, don't ask his friends to put in a word, and don't make a scene to prove you're sorry. Meanwhile, do the thing you said would change. A week of keeping your word does more than a second apology. For the conversation after, our post on cute things to say to your boyfriend has a section on what to say once you've both calmed down.

When a gesture helps, and when it makes it worse

A gesture comes after the words, never instead of them. Flowers with no apology look like you're trying to skip the conversation. A small gesture that shows you heard him (the food he loves, ordered in on the night you were meant to cook, or a written version of what you said) can land well once you've talked. If you'd rather he had the apology in writing, our digital apology gifts help you say it carefully. The Letter below is free; Paper Crane and Text Thread are premium.

Questions people ask

How do I apologize to my boyfriend after a fight?

Wait until you're both calm, then say what you did, that it was on you, why it hurt him and what you'll do differently. Keep any explanation short and leave out what he did. Then let him answer in his own time.

How do I say sorry to my boyfriend over text?

Use text for small mistakes or to open the door to a talk. Name what you did in one or two sentences, skip the "but", and send it once. For anything big, follow it with a call or a conversation in person.

What if my boyfriend won't accept my apology?

Give him time. Tell him once that you're there when he wants to talk, then stop chasing and do what you said would change. Forgiveness comes from seeing you keep your word, not from hearing sorry again.

Should I give my boyfriend a gift to say sorry?

Only after you've apologized in words. A small gesture that shows you listened can help; an expensive one instead of a conversation usually makes things worse.

Say the thing.

The people we love mostly hear us in passing. This is the other way: a small, deliberate thing they can open twice.
